Depression is more than just feeling sad or going through a rough patch in life. It’s a serious mental health condition that requires understanding and medical care.

Jill Turbeck of Sioux Falls knows that for a fact. Jill has battled depression ever since her childhood.

“When I was about ten years old, I started noticing that something wasn’t quite right. I did not want to be with my friends. I just wanted to stay in school during recess and be with my teacher. I didn’t quite know what was wrong. But, I knew I wasn’t being me. It took quite a few years of feeling this way. I was into cutting myself. I tried to make the pain make sense and have people take notice of my pain.”

During the tough times and there were many, Jill thought about suicide.

“When I was 13-years-old, I did decide to end my life. But, I was unsuccessful in my attempt. Looking back over the past 13 years, I am grateful for failing to die. I am now grateful for a chance to keep living my life.”

From first hand experience, Jill offers this message of hope if you’re afflicted with depression.

“Just keep hanging on. There is so much that’s going to get better in your life. It may not happen right away. It may get better and then fall apart. But, that’s the way life is. I do want to tell people who are reading this story---I promise everything will get better. Just hold on and see what’s in store for you.”

So, how is Jill’s life today?

“It’s great! I got married two weeks ago. I love my job. I love the people in my life. I really couldn’t be any happier. That’s coming from a person who still lives with severe depression. If that means anything to anyone---life will improve. There is hope!

Jill, a Real Survivior, is willing to share her story if it helps just one person who is afflicted with depression.

Thank you Jill Turbeck for caring!
