I have to tell somebody about this. I have a problem. I have become obsessed with something, and I can't stop. What's more, I don't think I want to stop. My obsession? The song "Come and Get Your Love" by Redbone.

I have known about this classic rock staple for a long time of course. I'd probably heard it hundreds of times growing up. But, over the last year it has wormed it's way into my very being. I can't pinpoint what it is exactly about the song that gets to me. It has a wonderful bass line, a catchy call and response bit, it really comes down to being a fun song.

I can trace the beginning of this obsession directly to the move Guardians of the Galaxy. If you've been unfortunate enough to talk movies with me you know that I loooooooooove that movie. It's one of my top three of 2014 (the other two: Captain America: The Winter Solder and Rise of the Planet of the Apes). The song shows up in the beginning of the movie when we first meet a grown up Quinn, AKA Starlord, as he lands on an abandoned planet in search of a Sphere. The song and Chris Pratt's performance as Startlord establish the tone of the movie perfectly. I really like a great character introduction, the song makes it and started my obsession.

Naturally I ran out (or walked to my computer) and got the soundtrack album Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1 which features Redbone right there on track eight. It went into immediate rotation in my truck. Yea, that was me blasting it out my windows as I rolled down 57th street.

Then I thought, 'this is such a good song and my kids love music as much as me so, I can introduce them to a really awesome older song and we'll bond and I'll be hero dad!' So I tried it. And they couldn't care less. They politely waited out dad's embarrassing enthusiasm and hoped that what came up next on shuffle would be something Kidz Bop-ish or in the video game novelty music genre.

Oh well, I ended up being content with my private truck cab jam sessions with Redbone on repeat. Then I remembered the existence of this:

Everybody's favorite mid 90's Euro-Dance grope Real McCoy had a hit with a cover of the song in 1995. It's as awesome as the original. So now, I've doubled up on my "Come and Get Your Love" binges.
