RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — Transportation officials in the Black Hills will seek state permission to lower speeds on Interstate 90 from Rapid City to Sturgis during the upcoming 75th anniversary Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

The event in early August is expected to set an attendance record, with up to 1 million people. Transportation Department Region Engineer Todd Seaman tells the Rapid City Journal that officials will ask the state Transportation Commission to temporarily reduce the speed limit on I-90 in the area from 80 mph to 65 mph.

The commission will consider the proposal at its April 23 meeting.
