A bridge over Interstate 90 near Hartford is closed after being struck by a passing truck Monday afternoon.

Reports came in about 4:00 PM of an excavator being hauled by a semi that struck the underside of the span near Exit 387 that leads to Hartford. The crossing north-south road is 463rd Avenue which comes in on the west side of the community.

South Dakota Department of Transportation officials announced in a press release what the outline will be for the bridge during the days ahead. There will be occasional lane closures on Interstate 90 to inspect the damage to the bridge.

It was announced within a couple of hours that both lanes were open to traffic going westbound and all the debris had been removed.

Also the bridge will be closed at least for Monday night into Tuesday to inspect the integrity of the structure. Motorists will have to use 461st Avenue to the west or 466th Avenue to the east as alternate routes.
