HURON, S.D. (AP) — A Huron woman who stole money from a crowd-funding account she set up to help an 8-year-old burn victim with medical expenses has been spared jail time but ordered to make restitution.

Beadle County State's Attorney Mike Moore tells KOKK radio that 35-year-old Jaima Schultz took about $6,500 from the GoFundMe account for personal use.

Schultz initially was charged with grand theft embezzlement. She reached a plea deal with prosecutors and on Tuesday pleaded guilty to petty theft. She was given a 90-day suspended jail sentence and was ordered to make restitution. Moore says Schultz has already repaid about half of the amount.

Schultz also was fined $500. She apologized in court to the boy's family.
