Hunters Hit Fields across South Dakota for Pheasant Opener

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — Hunters hit fields across South Dakota for this year's pheasant opener.

Saturday was the season's first day, and the Game, Fish and Parks Department reports the "army of orange" was out in full force.

Hunters in central South Dakota averaged 1 bird each, while some in Lyman and Hughes counties averaged up to 2 birds. The average bird count per hunter in northeast South Dakota was less than one bird in the east and 1.5-2 birds in Edmunds and Faulk counties.

In southeast South Dakota, the average bird count per hunter ranged from less than one to 1.5 going from east to west. A few hunters limited out in the state's far northwestern corner.

Initial reports show two people were injured during opening day.

The season runs through Jan 3.
