Every year, during the first full weekend of October, the kids get a break from school and I get to set out with my sons, 10 and 12, on what we've come to know as "The Guy's Trip" to the Black Hills of South Dakota. During this 4 day mini-vacation, my wife and daughter stay home and do arts, crafts, see movies, and tons of shopping.

We miss them while we're gone - but we've got guy stuff to do. Like ATV the trails, and tons of hiking.

We also have a day to stroll main street's of towns such as Deadwood, Rochford, Keystone, and Hill City.

We found ourselves walking around Lead last Friday when we came upon the historic little church which is now a tourist gift shop next the the Homestake Mine.

We were welcomed by a sweet lady who explained she is going out of business after 35 years and everything is on sale. While picking out a nice silver horse pendant for my daughter, my 10-year-old asked the lady, "How much for the bear in the window?"

Oh no.

She explained that that bear has been there for over 30 years and is somewhat legendary. "But," she said, "I need a good home for him. His name is Rumbles and if you promise to take good care of him you can have him for $10."

Oh no!

The bear is huge and my first concern is do we have enough room in the Jeep to get him back to Sioux Falls?

I said "I don't think so, guys."

But because I can't resist a good story - and I'm kind of a softy when it comes to my kids - well, here's the next thing I remember:

And for the next few days we have an oversized cabin guest - even at the table.

To the nice lady at the gift shop, thank you for making our trip a special one and for the great memories. Best of luck on your retirement.

Rumbles has indeed found a great home.
