With the holiday season now upon us, the Sioux Falls Police Department has suggestions for shoppers.

“Make sure your packages are not sitting out in the open. If you have a trunk place the packages there. If you’re in some type of SUV or van try to keep them out of view. By all means make sure your doors are locked," said Sioux Falls Police Department Public Information Officer Sam Clemens.

?A lot of times people hit the remote key device to lock the doors. I suggest they check the vehicle to make sure all the doors are locked. It takes a couple of seconds and won’t hurt anything. The bottom line is this: keep the valuables out of site and by all means make sure the car is locked.”

Clemens says shoppers should always be aware of their surroundings.

“We don’t really see a lot of problems especially around the mall. But, it’s always a good idea for people to know what’s going on around them," continued Clemens.

"If they see something suspicious or something out of the ordinary call police. If it’s something you feel someone might harm you get back in your vehicle, call police and wait for the officers to come and check things out.”

It’s also important to park in well-lit areas.
