Two Sioux Falls police officers were on a call around 10:00 a.m. Thursday morning at an apartment complex in the northeast area of the city when they both smelled raw marijuana.

Information Officer Sam Clemens says the officers completed the original and unrelated call at 705 North Cleveland Avenue, then contacted management and did some investigating and traced it to a high-speed ventilation fan that had recently been installed, one for each individual apartment:

Clemens says the occupants of the apartment were located and arrested Thursday afternoon. He says 26-year-old Nicholas Hite McIlroy and 24-year-old Sarah Ann Taylor were each charged with felony marijuana possession, felony possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession and distribution of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, maintaining a place where drugs are kept and violation of a drug-free zone.

Clemens says the search turned up grow lights, fertilizer and other items for growing marijuana and two handguns.
