Whether you believe it's an actual holiday or just a day that brings in lots of dollars for the greeting card industry, the flower industry, the jewelry stores and candy companies, you might be surprised at what people spend on Valentine's Day.

According to Wallethub.com, Valentine's Day is the third largest consumer holiday in the United States when it comes to the amount of money spent. Americans will spend about $19.7 billion dollars, all in the name of love. In comparison, American's spend about $21.2 billion dollars letting their Mom know just how much they mean to them and around $630.5 billion dollars for the winter holidays.

With that knowledge, Wallethub.com has broken things down for Valentine's Day 2016 By the Numbers.

To celebrate or not to celebrate? Wallethub.com survey found that 45.2 percent of adult Americans will celebrate Valentine’s Day. Ninety point eight percent will purchase a Valentine (of some sort) for their sweetie and one in five Americans will get something special for their pet. If you are single on Valentine's Day, about 24 percent of Americans will get something for themselves, and 53 percent of women asked said they would break up with their significant other if they do not receive a Valentine.

Americans have a love affair with spending! The total Valentine's Day spending projected for 2016 is $19.7 billion dollars. The average dollar amount someone will spend on their sweetie in 2016 is $146.84.

Flowers, candy, jewelry and greeting cards are always popular gift choices. About 36.4 percent of Americans will purchase flowers for a total of $1.99 billion dollars. Fifty percent of Americans plan to purchase sweets for their sweet for a total of $1.76 billion dollars. Because the price of jewelry is higher than flowers and candy, around 19.9 percent of Americans will purchase a piece of jewelry, but the total spent will be around $4.45 billion dollars. Of the 1,300 different Valentine Hallmark cards to choose from, $1.15 billion dollars will be spent on finding the "perfect" message.

For those looking for love on Valentine's Day, five percent of marriages and committed relationships will begin on one of the 399 dating websites listed in the United States. There will be on average of 14 million marriage proposals on Valentine's Day, and about 1.9 million people will change their relationship status within a week of Valentine's Day.
