I had planned on buying a new mattress anyway, but this information drove me over the edge.

We're currently playing a commercial on the radio that says, "If your mattress is 8, it's time to replace."  Meaning, if your mattress is 8 years or older, you need to replace it.

My mattress is 13 years old.  It's a King Koil that I bought for $99 each piece.  It's lasted a long time.  The box spring looks like new because I've never taken the plastic off and the mattress looks just as good, except for a small sag in the middle.  You can tell I'm a "middle of the bed" sleeper. Ever since my cat, Miss Kitty, came along and sleeps in my bed, I find myself no longer in the middle (she's kind of a bed hog), but now, I'm being pushed to the side - where there is a hump. It is rather uncomfortable. Comfort, combined with what I read today, made me take the leap to a new mattress.

According to Downright Domestic, here are a few gross facts about your bed?

  1. You sweat more than a pint a night and if it doesn't evaporate, you bed could become a breeding ground for mildew and mold.
  2. The average bed is home to six BILLION dust mites and they're eating your dead skin.
  3. Dust mites, bedbugs and even people can leave traces of fecal matter on sheets and mattresses.  This is why you buy a mattress cover and wash your sheets at least weekly.
  4. Bedbugs can ingest seven times their own weight in blood.
  5. Sleeping with your pet is not good. My doctor even told me this, but I just can't kick Miss Kitty out.  She looks so cute when she's sleeping. Pets can spread zoonoses, which are pathogens that go from animals to humans.
  6. Staying in a hotel?  Strip that bedspread! Hotel blankets and bedspreads aren't cleaned that often and since they're usually patterned, stains are easily camouflaged. I do NOT want to know what the people in the room before me were doing on top of the bed.
  7. Metal bedsprings act like many random magnets, therefore becoming a source of radiation from static magnetic fields and potentially causing health problems.
  8. Pillows absorb germs from our skin and air. Replace your pillow every 2 years and invest in pillow protectors.

Let's face it, there are like 30 mattress stores in Sioux Falls, choose one and get the family new mattresses!
