Just when you thought ‘Game of Thrones‘ might be the most epic HBO series ever produced, the pay cable network has signed a deal to adapt Michael Crichton’s 1973 sci-fi tale ‘Westworld,’ partnering with J.J. Abrams, Bad Robot, Jonathan Nolan and Jerry Weintraub. The original Yul Brynner-James Brolin film inspired its own TV series and movie sequel, so which will HBO’s new version follow?

According to Deadline, Bad Robot’s ‘Westworld’ has received a pilot production commitment, and will tell the tale of “a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the future of sin.” ‘Person of Interest‘ creator and ‘The Dark Knight’ co-writer Jonathan Nolan will write the script with ‘Burn Notice‘ scribe Lisa Joy, Nolan directing the pilot. Nolan and Joy will executive produce with Abrams, Weintraub and Bryan Burk, with Kathy Lingg co-executive producing.

The original 1973 ‘Westworld’ told the story of a future resort wherein guests could pay to live out time period fantasies brought to life by sophisticated human-like androids, before the robots began running amuck and killing the resort’s crew. The film spawned the sequel ‘Futureworld,’ and eventually the short-lived ’80s TV series ‘Beyond Westworld.’

‘Westworld’ also marks Bad Robot’s first major cable sale, and one of HBO’s largest pilot commitments in years. Watch the original trailer below, and tell us if you’d want to see ‘Westworld’ resurrected by J.J. Abrams and Jonathan Nolan!
