See the above station wagon? Now, picture it covered with these "Love Stickums" (circa 1960s) in neon pink, fluorescent orange, vibrant blue, psychedelic purple and "groovy" green!

Imagine this strange, nefarious-looking vehicle following children down the streets of Yankton, South Dakota on a Halloween night in the 1960s. Had you seen this odd occurrence, back then, you might have thought that evil-doing, drug-crazed hippies, were about to perpetrate some sort of ghastly transgression against the candy-crazed wee ones of a small South Dakota town.

You, of course, would have been besmirching the reputation of a hardworking registered nurse who was following her own kids through the streets, as they trick-or-treated, to make sure they stayed safe on that ghoulish holiday. The Yankton police department, however, wasn't so sure what they were dealing with. So, they pulled Mom over and had a chat with her. I'm sure they all had a good laugh, because it was one of Mom's favorite stories about life in our weirdly wounded family. One of the happy ones.

I am not sure at what point or why my dad decided to plaster our Chevy Caprice wagon with these loud, cartoonish "peace" daisies. I do remember that the car was a lemon which had innumerable engine problems and other issues like glass surfacing through the carpeting on the floor constantly. I remember my parent's combative discussions with the car dealership over the fact that they thought the car had been wrecked before delivery and then sold without disclosure to them.

At some point they tried to remove the flowers and that left the white wagon with faux wood-grain sides, with a lot less color, but ghostly outlines of daisies until they day they got rid of it.

It is amazing what you find while cleaning house and sorting through piles of "stuff I'll sort through later"!
