PIERRE - South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard says people should take time this month to recognize the sacrifices and successes of those who have served in the U.S. military.

May is National Military Appreciation Month.

The governor says the vigilance of members of the armed forces has been instrumental in preserving the nation's freedom, security and prosperity.

Maj. Gen. Timothy Reisch (RYSH), Adjutant General of the South Dakota National Guard, says May is dedicated to all military men and women and their families. He says the month provides an opportunity to educate young people about the historical importance of the armed forces.

The month includes Victory in Europe Day on May 8, Military Spouse Appreciation Day on May 11, Armed Forces Day on May 18, and Memorial Day on May 27.
