PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — Gov. Dennis Daugaard says South Dakotans should consider registering as organ, eye and tissue donors.

The governor says Christmas is a time for giving, and there is no greater gift than the gift of life through organ donation.

Daugaard says a new law has established an online donor registry managed by the state Public Safety Department. He says he hopes more South Dakotans will use the online registry as a convenient way to register as a donor.

More than 56 percent of South Dakotans are currently registered as donors. The governor says LifeSource, a nonprofit that manages organ and tissue donation, reports that every donor has the potential of saving up to 60 lives.
