FORT PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — While emergency sirens in Pierre sounded during a severe thunderstorm in late June, the three sirens in neighboring Fort Pierre remained silent.

Hughes County Emergency Manager Rob Fines tells the Capital Journal that he made the call to have the sirens sound in both cities, but a glitch prevented the Fort Pierre sirens from sounding.

Pierre Police Chief Dave Panzer says the problem involved a new system and a new employee and has since been corrected.

The June 22 storm brought winds of more than 100 mph to the region, damaging or destroying trees, homes and other structures. An empty manufactured home in Fort Pierre was flipped upside down. No injuries were reported in the city.
