PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — The state's deer hunters would get access to more tags during the 2016 deer season under proposals presented earlier this week to the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Commission.

The Pierre Capital Journal reports that South Dakota's deer population is continuing to rebound from a series of bad winters starting in 2010. Senior big game biologist Andy Lindbloom says the recent mild winters mean good news for the state's deer populations.

Whitetail deer in particular have been rebounding well. Fawn survival rates were around 70 percent in 2015, and the juvenile survival rate was about 80 percent. Adult doe survival was about 86 percent.

For hunters, that means more licenses and tags.

Two West River deer units would be managed in 2016 for a shrinking whitetail population.
