SIOUX FALLS - A key economic indicator shows that South Dakota's largest city experienced slight growth in 2011.

The Bureau of Economic Analysis reports that the Gross Domestic Product in the Sioux Falls metropolitan area increased by 0.9 percent in 2011, which are the latest figures available.

Sioux Falls showed declines in the GDP in both 2009 and 2010.

Ralph Brown, a retired economics professor at the University of South Dakota, tells the Argus Leader that 2012 should show greater growth for Sioux Falls. He cites primarily the increase in building permits for the area.

Figures show that the Rapid City metro area saw a 1.9 percent increase in GDP in 2011.
