Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood aren’t afraid to get their hands a little dirty, especially in the name of helping others.

The superstars, along with former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, began work on a new Habitat for Humanities town home development last week in East Oakland, Calif.

“That’s Carter’s house right next door. Carter says it’s not a competition as long as his house gets done first,” Brooks shares with a chuckle.

It’s not the first time the country couple has worked with the Carters, but Yearwood is always amazed at the former president’s stamina. “He’s a worker,” she reveals. “We’ve done many builds with them and he’s always working.”

The area they’re working in this time is known for its high crime rate, and several volunteers were even robbed at gunpoint. Hopefully, with the renovations made, the neighborhood will turn into a safe place for families and young children.

Brooks has been involved with Habitat for years. “Habitat for Humanity lends a hand, but the hand that takes it is a hard-working hand,” the singer said a few years back. He added that it “reminds us of the kind of people we can be. Habitat reminds me I can be something better than I see in the mirror.”

The star and his wife have helped build 100 homes for Haiti hurricane victims, traveling there a second time for the 29th Annual Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project. Their humanitarian efforts are an inspiration to the country music community and fans worldwide, and whether they team up for music or other causes, they’ll make a sure difference with through their heart and passion.
