WATERTOWN, S.D. (AP) — The future of a Watertown cattle sale barn remains uncertain days after a fire destroyed the structure.

No animals were in the South Dakota Livestock Sales barn when it burned early Monday morning, and no people were injured.

Watertown Fire Battalion Chief Tyler McElhany tells KELO television that the barn has been a significant part of Watertown and Codington County, where agriculture is the number one industry. McElhany says livestock sales are a huge part of that.

Investigators haven't yet released the cause of the fire.

The building's owners haven't said what their next step will be. Customers have been told the sale barn is out of business until further notice.
