RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — A resident of a mobile home park has launched a fundraising campaign for a playground after a 2-year-old Rapid City boy was fatally struck by a pickup.

The Highway Patrol has said Seth Brien was walking in the roadway in February next to a 3-year-old girl riding a tricycle who was also hit. The boy died at the scene, and the girl was injured.

The Rapid City Journal reports Sonya Harrison launched the fundraising campaign to get Country Village Estates a playground, in hopes of averting future accidents. The mobile home park doesn't have playground equipment, and it would double as a memorial to the boy.

Harrison says there's a need for a place for children to play in the area, and that it isn't uncommon to see kids playing on or near the road.
