After writing yesterday's blog, it got me thinking more about camping with the kids when they were young and how much fun we had.

One of my favorite things to do was sit around the campfire and make s'mores - or as they used to say,

"Daddy, is it time to marsh some mallows?"

Not only did we make s'mores, but we used to also make things called Shaggy Dogs, Campfire Pie and Banana Boats."

How do you make those, you ask?

The Shaggy Dog was just a roasted marshmallow on a stick, dipped in melted chocolate and then rolled in coconut.

To make a Campfire Pie, you need to have a pie iron.  They're only about $10 at most camping stores.  All you do is put two buttered slices of bread in the iron (butter side out) and put some pie filling in the middle.  Heat each side about 5 minutes and enjoy.

The Banana Boat was my favorite.  You start by cutting a narrow V shape wedge down the middle of a banana, and then fill it up with chocolate, nuts and marshmallow.  Once the banana is packed, lay the peal back over the top and wrap it in foil and put it over the fire.  Make sure you put the cut side up though, otherwise all the good stuff will leak out.  It usually only takes about 5 minutes for everything to melt.

Breakfast was also a fun experience.  We used to love to make Ziploc Omelets - which are really simple to make.

You start by having everyone write their name on a quart size Ziploc freezer bag (it has to be a freezer bag).

Crack two eggs in the bag and then start adding your favorite ingredients - cheese, ham, onion, green pepper, tomato, hash browns, salsa, etc.  Squish it all up and then place it in a pot of boiling water for 13 minutes.  After which your omelet will slide right out.

Fun times indeed!

If you have any other fun camping foods your family enjoys, let me know.

Okay, I think I've made my decision - Newton Hills, here I come!!!
