Friday The 13th AND A Full Moon? Maybe I Should Just Call In Sick!
If you suffer from friggatriskaidekaphobia or selenophobia, then it might just be a good day to call in sick. If you are a superstitious person, it’s going to be a clash of phobias. Bringing possibly more bad luck then one could ever want, tomorrow is not only Friday the 13th, but there will also be a full moon.
It’s pretty rare for these two events to happen at the same time. The last time this phenomenon occurred was October 13th, 2000, and it probably won’t happen again for quite some time.
According to data from the United State’s official timekeepers, the U.S. Naval Observatory, the projected time for the next Friday the 13th with a full moon won’t happen for at least another 20 years. One thing to consider, however, is that the U.S. Naval Observatory doesn’t project data past the year 2035. So if you believe everything you read on the internet, the next Friday the 13th with a full moon should happen on Friday, August 13th, 2049. (At least according to Research Maniacs.)
If you are numbers person, the odds of of a year having a Friday the 13th with a full moon are just 5.81 percent. That means it happens, on average, every 20 years or so. But again, this is just a probability. It could happen more or it could happen less.
Now, is Friday the 13th REALLY unlucky? Do bad things really happen on Friday the 13th? Honestly, no. It’s just another day on the calendar. But, the date does cause people to act differently out of fear, anxiety or superstition about the date. This, in turn, could cause bad things to happen. So the date itself doesn’t really mean bad things are going to happen, it’s the people that make the bad things happen.
What about the idea that people are just a little crazier during full moons? Many times police departments will suggest there is an increase in crime during the full moon. There have even been studies that suggest that there are ties between mental instability and full moon cycles. But, according to the American Psychological Association, there is no link between full moons and any effects of temporary insanity.
Remember, what you choose to be superstitious about is totally up to you! Just remember that Friday the 13th is just another day on the calendar and a full moon is something we have lived with forever. So just go about your day like it’s every other day. But just in case…here’s hoping you have only the best of luck on Friday! (My fingers are even crossed…..)
