This July 25-26, Ford Motor Company is bringing its free teen driver training program, Driving Skills for Life, to Sioux Falls. Ford Driving Skills for Life was developed in 2003 in conjunction with the Governors Highway Safety Association and a panel of safety experts to address the leading cause of death among teenagers in the United States – vehicle crashes. One of the causes leading to vehicle crashes is distracted driving. In 2013, 61.3 percent of teens in South Dakota admitted to texting or emailing while behind the wheel.

The program serves as a step in the learning process for newly licensed drivers, providing new skills in key areas teens tend to lack. Participants will drive specially-equipped vehicles on road courses at the South Dakota State Highway Patrol under the supervision of professional instructors, improving skills in:

  • Hazard Recognition
  • Vehicle Handling
  • Space Management
  • Reaction Time
  • Braking and Stopping Distances
  • How to avoid the dangers of distracted and impaired driving

Hundreds of South Dakota teens have the opportunity to participate for the first time, but registration for this free event is limited and signed consent forms are required. For more information and to register, please visit www.drivingskillsforlife.com
