Fort Pierre Development Gets Boost in Public Vote

FORT PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — Supporters of a $16 million development on the Missouri River in Fort Pierre say it can move forward after a public vote on part of the project.

City residents on Tuesday affirmed a decision by the City Council to approve a permit for a boat storage area at the proposed Riverwalk Landing. The vote was 396 in favor and 269 against, for an approval rate of 60 percent.

Mayor Sam Tidball says the vote validates the council's efforts to attract economic development.

Riverwalk Landing is to include a marina, restaurant and retail space. Opponents believe the city is giving the project preferential treatment. They referred the City Council actions to approve the boat storage permit but failed in efforts to refer zoning changes and a deferred development fee.
