SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — A Florida man accused of murdering his girlfriend more than 25 years ago has pleaded not guilty.

Fifty-seven-year-old Kim Aune appeared in court for the first time Tuesday. He was indicted in April in South Dakota and arrested in Florida.

Authorities say Aune shot 21-year-old Kimberly Eidsness on Nov. 13, 1989, at their home east of Sioux Falls.

State's Attorney Aaron McGowan says Aune, who was 31 at the time, was living with Eidness when she died. He reported the shooting to police, who initially did not consider her death a murder.

Aune is in custody at the Minnehaha County Jail and will remain jailed on a $1 million bond.

If convicted, he faces a mandatory life sentence or the death penalty.
