I always say that it is very important to be open to learning new things and this week I learned something about our neighbors in Iowa. I never knew that fireworks were not allowed in the "Life Changing, Fields of Opportunity" state.

To be truthful, they are allowed to use sparklers, but that is about all. This issue has apparently come up time and time again in their state legislature, only to fizzle (if you'll pardon the expression) in defeat year-after-year. But this time the Iowa Senate thinks they have the votes to get it out of their chamber and over to the Iowa House, where it also has garnered some support.

The current bill would allow Iowans to legally buy and use more powerful fireworks like, Roman candles, firecrackers and bottle rockets. But only on particular days in June, July, December and January. That is not to say that there isn't still some very explosive (again, pardon the expression) opposition to the bill from rural representatives and lobbyists for firefighters and others.

The representatives who support the change in the Iowa fireworks law believe they have the votes to get it out of the legislature and on to the governor, with the hope that he will sign it. They certainly aren't expecting the whole issue to, (just one more I promise) blow up in their faces.
