Filing Deadline Near for Disaster Jobless Aid

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — People who lost jobs or became unable to do business because of the early October blizzard that hit western South Dakota have until next Wednesday to file for disaster unemployment insurance.

The state Department of Labor and Regulation says that to be eligible for benefits, workers must be unemployed or self-employed people must be unable to do business as a direct result of the snowstorm and subsequent flooding that occurred from Oct. 3 through Oct. 16.

The filing deadline applies to people hurt by the storm in Butte, Corson, Custer, Dewey, Fall River, Haakon, Harding, Jackson, Lawrence, Meade, Pennington, Perkins, Shannon and Ziebach counties. That area includes the Cheyenne River and Pine Ridge Indian reservations.

People can apply for benefits by calling the Unemployment Insurance Call Center at 605-626-3179.
