A top criminal agency in the United States rates Sioux Falls Police ability to solve cases at a rate well above the average continuing a five-year trend. That means the city is good at fighting crime.

Federal Bureau of Investigation statistics compiled among major cities in the country showed that Sioux Falls outperformed their counterparts in seven categories. The numbers are based on cases from 2014 and the definition of “cleared cases” is that either an arrest was made or exceptional circumstances such as the death of the offender prevented an arrest.

Topping the list is the ability to solve murder cases. Nationally, 64.5 percent of cases were cleared in 2014. Sioux Falls achieved 100 percent and is on a 16-year streak.

As far as other types of cases cleared in Sioux Falls versus nationally, Aggravated Assualt (85.7 to 56.3%), Rape (62.4 to 38.9%), Theft (39.5 to 23%), Stolen Vehicle, (39.3 to 12.8%), Robbery (37.8 to 29.6%) and Burglary (24.1 to 13.6%) were all better than the normal rate.

Police Chief Matt Burns says it’s part of a five year stretch of high performance for the department. “I’m very proud of these numbers and where we stand up against others nationally. The citizens can be proud of the work the men and women of our Department do for them.”
