On Tuesday, October 16, 2012, at 6:23 p.m., Sioux Falls Police, Sioux Falls Fire Rescue, and Rural Metro Ambulance were dispatched to an injury vehicle crash at East Tenth Street and Chapel Hill Road.

A preliminary investigation has shown that prior to the collision, a 1993 Buick LeSabre was eastbound on Tenth Street attempting to make a left turn onto Chapel Hill Road. A 2008 Hummer H2 traveling westbound in the outside lane struck the Buick broadside. The 72 year old male driver of the Buick and the 28 year old female driver of the Hummer H2 and her three children were all taken to Avera McKennan Hospital where they were all treated for minor injuries.

The 75 year old front seat passenger of the Buick LeSabre received fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Names of all the involved parties are not being released pending notification of next of kin.

Witnesses located on scene stated that a westbound silver or white vehicle had stopped in the inside lane and had “waved the driver of the Buick through” to allow him to complete his left-hand turn when it was struck broadside by the Hummer H2. Sioux Falls Police are attempting to locate this vehicle at this time. The investigation is continuing.

At this writing, East Tenth Street has been reopened to traffic. The Sioux Falls Police Department appreciates the community’s cooperation while the street was closed for the investigation.
