The U.S. Department of Agriculture has formally announced dates associated with the new farm programs authorized in the 2014 Farm Bill.

South Dakota Farm Bureau reminds farmers and ranchers to take time to review the changes and make appointments at their local Farm Service Agency office.

Wayne Smith, Executive Director of the South Dakota Farm Bureau and farmer from the Flandreau, South Dakota area tells us,

Producers now will have to make a one-time election of whether they want Agricultural Risk Coverage or Price Loss Coverage for the 2014 through 2018 crop years. There are a couple of good online tools you can use to calculate these coverage decisions, and we encourage farmers to take advantage of them.

The USDA-announced dates are as follows:

  • September 29, 2014 to February 27, 2015: landowners may visit their local Farm Service Agency to update yield history and/or reallocate base acres
  • November 17, 2014 to March 31, 2015: farmers make a one-time election of either Agricultural Risk Coverage (ARC) or Price Loss Coverage (PLC) for the 2014 through 2018 crop years
  • Mid-April 2015 through Summer 2015: farmers sign contracts for the 2014 and 2015 crop years
  • In October 2015, payments for the 2014 crop year will be made, if needed
