Banks, post offices and many other government agencies were all closed on Monday to celebrate Martin Luther King Day. So riddle me this Batman, why were the kids in the Sioux Falls school district in class on Monday then?

The answer stems to the district's ongoing debate over the Fall start.

In 2010, school officials agreed to start the 2011-12 school year a week later than usual, but the cost was adding in extra school days during the regular calendar. A couple of those days ended up being Native American Day and MLK Day.

Three years later both of those holidays are still school days in the Sioux Falls public school system.

The district says the change allowed teachers time to finish first semester lessons before the holiday break, resulting in a scheduling milestone that have district officials expressing concern over the upcoming vote on another possible post-Labor Day start for students.

Being in class on MLK Day Monday did give students all over the district an opportunity to honor, learn, have conversation and discussions about Martin Luther King Jr. and race relations.  Which students did appear to enjoy.
