By now you've probably heard or read about the arrests of ten people in South Dakota through a federal investigation known as "Operation Black Widow."

Eight of the defendants are from Watertown, one is from Sioux Falls and the other is from Deadwood. Most of the drug charges allege conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine, while the firearms charges vary from being a felon in possession of a firearm to making false statements in the acquisition of firearms.

Now you might not run in the same circles as the people arrested - I know I don't. But this case is another illustration of the things that go on while we just try to go on with our lives.

I'm always surprised at the morning police briefing by the things that happen during the night or early morning while much of society is asleep: domestic disturbances, burglaries, larcenies and drunk driving.

Add this to the Cleveland case, where we're told by police that three women were held against their will for as long as 10 or 11 years. The suspect in the case had neighbors, a job and family in the same city, but maybe he got away with it for so long because the right people didn't notice.

But it might be more than that, and if I had the answer, I'd share it.

My point is that a lot is going on around you and me that we might not be aware of, so pay attention to your surroundings and if something looks suspicious to you, contact law enforcement.
