Today (4/12) is not only National Library Day and Library Workers Day, but it's also been proclaimed D.E.A.R. Day - a.k.a. Drop Everything and Read Day.

Despite the fact it's been nearly 50 years, I can still remember the day my first grade teacher handed out the "Dick and Jane" books.

I would still rank that as being one of the most exciting days of my first grade career. That, and the fact, naps were no longer required.

Believe it or not, I have a "Dick and Jane" book on display in my house today. High up in the family room we have various old toys on display - including my first real book.

Learning how to read opened a whole new world to this young country boy. Still to this day, I'm amazed how simple words can paint such a beautiful mind picture.

The summer between first and second grade I remember biking down to the pasture, taking my place on the big rock dad had pulled from the field, and reading a book.

Fast forward some 20 years - one of my most fond memories was when I got to show my two kids the "reading rock" from my early years. We still call it the "reading rock" today.

Those times when the grand-kids would spend the weekend and Grandma and Grandpa's house, they would also make sure to pack along a book to read at the rock.

So, on this National Library Day, I challenge you to find some time to "Drop Everything and Read." Find your own special reading rock. You'll be glad you did.
