Dolly Parton tackles gender equality in a triumphant new song, "A Woman's Right," which she wrote and recorded as a contribution for an all-star album dedicated to educating Americans on the constitutional amendments. Readers can press play above to hear Parton's jubilant anthem about the suffrage movement of the early 20th century.

Parton's "A Woman's Right" lyrics ring true to the blue-collar roots that her country music heritage knows so well. Although the song was inspired by how the 19th amendment provided women with the right to vote, it's more universally applicable, too: “They said a woman’s place / Was staying in her hut / Washin’, cookin’, cleanin’ / Wipin’ babies' butts," Parton sings. "They said she’d never see the day / We’d equal up to them / But here we are / We’ve come so far / I guess we sure showed them.”

27: The Most Perfect Album was created by Jad Abumrad, host of the podcasts Radiolab and More Perfect, who says the project was intended to remind U.S. citizens about the rich history of our Constitution. "I’d venture a guess that most Americans (like us, before we started this project) can’t name more than one or two amendments to the Constitution, let alone remember that there are 27 of them," Abumrad says in his introduction to the album.

"We invited some of the best musicians in the world to create songs inspired by each of the 27 amendments -- a kind of Schoolhouse Rock! for the 21st century," he adds. In addition to Parton, the participating artists include They Might Be Giants, Devendra Banhart, Kash Doll, Torres, Kevin Morby and many others.

"Being lucky enough to be a successful woman in business, I wanted to exercise my right to write about the 19th Amendment to praise and uplift women," Parton shares. "I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I, some good gals and a few good guys did putting it together for you.”

27: The Most Perfect Album will be released in conjunction with the third season of Abumrad's More Perfect podcast. It can be heard in its entirety on Project.WNYC.org.
