Dogs That Injured Woman, Police Officer in Sioux Falls Euthanized

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Two dogs that bit a woman and a police officer in Sioux Falls in July have been euthanized.

The Argus Leader reports Animal Control deemed the dogs vicious following the July 31 incident. The Tibetan mastiffs were put down after their owners decided against keeping them.

Authorities say an officer responding to the report of a woman attacked by a dog was bitten on the right thigh by one of the dogs. When the dog approached him a second time, he fired two shots. Neither dog was hit.

If a dog is determined to be vicious, its owner must follow several rules, including registering the animal and keeping it in an escape-proof area when unattended.

Police spokesman Sam Clemens says vicious animals are euthanized if they aren't registered.
