Does Anyone Know What the Memphis Grizzlies are Doing?

The Memphis Grizzlies are a confusing team.

Head coach Dave Joerger appeared ready to jolt Memphis, and head home to Minnesota, where he grew up last week. Then, he decided to stay with the Grizzlies on Sunday, according to ESPN’s Marc Stein, and Ramona Shelburne.

However, that’s not the most complicated part of the story.

Grizzlies owner Robert Pera fired CEO Jason Levien and assistant general manager Stu Lash, via Stein last week. It was even mentioned in Stein’s article that Pera wanted to fire Joerger early in the 2013-2014 season.

Then, Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix wrote about the Joerger saga in Memphis, and said Pera talked about making Mitchell native Mike Miller a player-coach. Miller just wrapped up his 13th season in Memphis, and also played there from 2003 to 2008.

Have I befuddled you yet?

That’s all of the story, for now. I do think Memphis is a mess, and something is fishy, though. Two seasons in the playoffs (lost in the Western Conference finals in 2013, lost in first round in 2014), and management isn’t happy with their coaches? (Yet, in the same article by ESPN’s Stein and Ramona Shelburne, Pera says he knows that Joerger is committed to Memphis).

Is Pera really happy with Joerger as his head coach?

He fired two members of the front office and who knows if he could change his mind about Joerger in the next few months, or next season? For Joerger, going to Minnesota could have meant a new start, and more stability by being reunited with his old pal, Flip Saunders (Joerger used to attend practices held by Saunders).

On the flip side, Joerger can stay in Memphis and focus on getting back to the postseason. He made it easier on his players because learning a new coaches regime for the third time in three years would be difficult. Plus, if he had went to Minnesota, the future was bleak with the uncertainty of Kevin Love staying, and it would be tougher to build a playoff-caliber team. (Minnesota hasn’t been to the playoffs in ten seasons; last berth was in 2003-2004).

What do you think? Did Joerger make the right move by staying in Memphis?
