Do You Remember ‘Angel’ From The Rockford Files?

Jim Rockford was a kind of ‘everyman’ private detective. I think that’s why so many of us looked forward each week to the ‘Rockford Files’

In the late 1970′s and early 1980′s, James Garner portrayed Jim Rockford to perfection. Funny, irreverent and always able to somehow (often despite himself) get his man…or woman.

Then there was ‘Rocky’, his dad. Their relationship was an essential part of the show as well. In fact, thinking about it now, the show was all about relationships. Including Rockford’s, uh, rocky relationship with his friend Angel Martin.

Staurt Margolin portrayed Angel and did it so well he won the Emmy for Best Supporting Actor-Drama Series 2 years in a row (1979-1980)! Only 4 actor’s in the history of television have ever won that award at least twice playing the same character.

The video clip here pretty well sums up the character of Angel Martin…always well meaning, as long as the result would benefit himself. You couldn’t help but love Angel.

So whatever happened to Stuart Margolin?

In addition to many television and film roles, Margolin is a successful TV director as well, directing episodes of Magnum P.I., Mary Tyler Moore Show, Northern Exposure and many others.

He is also a songwriter and released an album in 1980.

Margolin still acts occasionally at the age of 73.
