MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) — Davison County commissioners have approved hiring a new deputy sheriff who will focus on security at the Mitchell courthouse.

The Daily Republic reports that Sheriff Steve Brink says he wants to be proactive and change with the times.

He says he wants the position to be a sheriff's deputy so the person can carry a gun while on duty. Brink says the deputy might have other duties, such as patrolling local schools.

He says now only unarmed jail staffers attend most court hearings.
