Dawg Days of Summer to Honor Military Dog Handlers
The American Legion, Argonne Post 32 in Adrian, MN is holding a Dawg Days of Summer event on July 2, 2016.
The center of the event is a mobile memorial to all of the Military Working Dog Handlers that have been killed in the War on Terror. To date that total is thirty-one of our best and brightest young soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines. Along with them an equal number of Military Working Dogs have been killed, though many were not teams, they were individuals that were killed when their partners survived.
The Dawg Days of Summer will be held from 1-4 PM on 1st Street, north of the Legion and also inside of the Adrian, MN Post Home.
Kevin Sonka put the memorial together in part to honor his son David who, along with his K9 Flex, were killed on May 5, 2013 during his tour in Afghanistan.
Nobles County Veteran’s Service Officer, Bill Brockberg, will attend along with a representative of the St. Paul Veteran’s Center and the Suicide Prevention Coordinator from the Sioux Falls, South Dakota VA Hospital.
Members of the Legion Riders, a motorcycle club within the American Legion family will also be involved.
Patrick Skluzacek will share his story of his son Tyler, a recent college graduate, developed a smart watch app that has the capability to stop the effects of night terrors and nightmares, a couple of the serious problems that affect veteran’s suffering with PTSD.
Curtis Hendel from Argonne Post 32 says the event is for the whole family.
Even if you have no connection to the military, this will be a great opportunity to honor some of those that have made the ultimate sacrifice so that we may enjoy our freedoms here at home.
