Crews Hope to Finish I-90 Stretch by Rally
SPEARFISH, S.D. (AP) - Fighting several weather-related delays since April, crews are working to rebuild the eastbound lane of Interstate 90 through Spearfish before the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
The Black Hills Pioneer reports that rainstorms and snowstorms have delayed the $12.4 million project.
State Department of Transportation officials say crews have been working on the four-mile stretch of the eastbound lanes from Exit 10 to Exit 14 to open them up by July 24, when more than 500,000 visitors begin arriving in the Black Hills.
The work is set to resume after the rally by Aug. 12, when crews will begin reconstructing the eastbound lanes from Exit 14 to Exit 17.
The project will continue in 2014 with reconstruction of the westbound lanes. Exit 14 will be revamped in 2015.
