Take some of country music's biggest stars and put them in a horror movie. What could go wrong?

Welcome to 'Hillbillys In A Haunted House'.

This time of year all the horror classics (and many that aren't classic) make their way to our televisions. How many times have Freddy Krueger and Michael Meyers showed up on my TV and resumed their evil killing ways? And you could fill an entire day with 'Friday The 13th' movies. Why, the other day I saw not only Chucky was back, but so was his Bride...and his seed!

Of course the one's I love best are the 'ol Black-and-White classics. Give me a bag of microwaved popcorn, a soda and Boris in the original 'Frankenstein' and I'm good to go! Toss in Bela in 'Dracula' and Lon as the Wolfman and what you have is a horror-fest on Turner Classic Movies.

Oh, and speaking of Turner Classic Movies, well...not every movie they air would be a classic in the literal sense of the word. Which brings me to...

'Hillbillys In A Haunted House'.

The other day I was tooling around the old cable and bumped into 'Hillbillys In A Haunted House' on TCM. The information said it starred Country Music Hall of Famer Ferlin Husky and featured fellow Hall of Famer's Sonny James and Merle Haggard. In addition, Hollywood horror legends John Carradine and Lon Chaney, Jr. (There's the Wolfman!) were in it, along with Basil Rathbone in his final role.

Wow, this was gonna be good!

Well, it was....interesting....OK, kind of interesting.

The plot? Well, I watched for a while and kind of got lost, so I went to Wikipedia and this was what they said:

Country singers are headed to Nashville. Their car breaks down and they stop overnight at an abandoned house, which turns out to be haunted. A ring of international spies who live in the house are seeking a top-secret formula for rocket fuel. While it is never revealed for whom they are spying, they carry out their activities under the cover of a supposed haunted house, which comes complete with a gorilla in the basement.

Yeah, that's what it was.

Anyway, there were some good country songs in it. The acting was, well, a little stilted. I'm trying to be kind here. Let's just say when the movie came out in 1967 it didn't sweep the Oscars.

Remember the double features at the local Drive-In? I'd guess maybe this would have been on that double bill.

But the character's did have some cool names! There was Woody, Boots, Jeepers, Maximillian and Madame Wong!

Check out the video below. Sonny James singing 'The Cat Came Back' from the film. And do check it out if you come across it on one of the movie channels. While this isn't 'Citizen Kane', it is some good campy country/horror/comedy movie fun!
