Corn planting is off to a slow start across the nation. Wet conditions have held producers back from getting the seeds in the ground.

Progress appears to have fallen slightly behind the five-year average according to a report released Monday (4/17) by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Here in South Dakota, corn planting is yet to begin. Zero percent is in the ground compared to one percent last year at this time and two percent for the five year average.

On the national scene in 2017, six percent of total corn acres were planted by April16.  Progress fell three percentage points short of the five-year average and six percentage points behind the same date in 2016.
