SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — City officials have reached a compromise with neighbors of an historic Sioux Falls park over removal of reddish stone pathways.

The city this summer plans to upgrade the century-old park that's on the National Register of Historic Places, to make the grounds more accessible to people with disabilities.

Architects called for removing some of the quartzite rock pathways and replacing them with concrete, but Sioux Falls' Board of Historic Preservation rejected the plan last week. The rock pathways were constructed in the 1930s, and the Terrace Park Neighborhood Association objected to their removal.

The Argus Leader newspaper reports a compromise was reached late last week that calls for some of the pathways to be spared. The Historic Preservation board will decide on the plan at a special meeting Wednesday.
