Classic TV Memory: Maverick
Beginning in 1974, actor James Garner was James Rockford, for 6 seasons America’s favorite Private Eye.
But that first season, when the show began, a lot of people were wondering “What’s Brett Maverick doing in that Pontiac Firebird??”
Those people knew Garner is the suave, funny Brett Maverick in the “Maverick” TV series from 1957-1960. Between those 2 iconic television roles (and after), Garner had also become a major Hollywood movie star.
But for television viewers, he was first Maverick, then Rockford.
Their were strong similarities in both roles. Both were funny, smart, suave, not always what you might call 100% honest, but good at heart and we fell in love with them…both.
Despite competing against the mega-popular “Ed Sullivan Sow”, Garner made the Maverick role his own and America loved him. For the first 7 episodes of the season, Garner was the ‘star’ but production demands made it so difficult that the production company gave Brett a brother, Bart, portrayed by actor Jack Kelly.
So why did Garner quit the ‘Maverick’ series after only 3 seasons? The usual word out of show business…a dispute with the production company.
Take a look at this video clip from the series and see if you can find a little ‘Jim Rockford’ in ‘Brett Maverick’.
