'Dances With Wolves' put South Dakota on the 'movie map' nearly 30 years ago.

The movie won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director for Kevin Costner (who was also nominated for Best Actor).

I was living in Rapid City at the time and people in bars (oh, and probably other establishments as well) delighted in talking about seeing Costner or others from the movie. I recall seeing a cute sign on the highway leading into hill city. It was on a pasture fence, behind which was a single horse. The sign read 'This is the only horse in western South Dakota not used in 'Dances With Wolves'.

Filmed mostly in our great state, the film received another high honor as it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

Let's go back nearly 30 years and watch the trailer for this incredible film.
