His name was David Akeman, but if you're like me, he was Stringbean, one of our favorites on Hee-Haw every week.

With that, shall we say, unique apparel he wore, you couldn't help but smile (or laugh out loud!) when Stringbean came onto your TV set.

But do you know the rest of the story?

On November 10, 1973 both Stringbean and his wife were murdered at their home after he had appeared on the Grand Ole Opry. Their house had been ransacked and the couple were killed when they came upon the intruders. It was general knowledge around the country music community that Stringbean always had a lot of cash around his home.

Cousins named Brown were ultimately convicted in the deaths of Stringbean and his wife Estelle.

Here, Country Hall of Famer's Flatt and Scruggs introduce Stringbean. Listen and watch that banjo as they perform "Run Little Rabbit Run".
