City’s Rules Could Put Uber out of Reach in Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — A ride-hailing service that operates in about 300 cities around the world has recruited drivers in Sioux Falls but might be blocked from operating in South Dakota's largest city.

Assistant City Attorney Keith Allenstein says services such as Uber will have to follow city rules governing independent contractors and taxi cab drivers.

Uber spokesman Jaime Moore tells the Argus Leader that such local regulations have kept Uber from expanding to other markets.

Uber is a mobile application that connects people who are seeking rides with drivers. The app has a calculator that estimates fares for riders. The company continues to grow despite myriad legal challenges over regulations, insurance and unfair competition.
