STURGIS, S.D. (AP) — The city of Sturgis is appealing the Meade County Commission's decision to accept an incorporation petition for the Buffalo Chip Campground.

The commission's decision in late February triggers a May 7 election in which the area's 50 registered voters could choose to make the venue an official town. Proponents say that would lead to economic development.

The campground hosts hordes of visitors during the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally

Sturgis officials maintain the campground is within the 3-mile jurisdiction of the city. KBHB radio reports that they also question whether some names on the petition were valid.

Several Meade County taxpayers filed a similar appeal earlier.
