City of Lead Looks at Redefining Term Wolf Hybrid
LEAD, S.D. (AP) — Lead city officials are working to redefine the term wolf hybrid in the city’s ordinance that prohibits keeping wild animals as pets inside city limits.
Officer Paul Witcraft tells the Black Hills Pioneer that the effort is being prompted by a May incident in which a dog that officials say is a wolf hybrid escaped from its enclosure and injured another dog.
Witcraft says he’s working on further defining what a wolf hybrid is in order to strengthen the ordinance.
Police Chief John Wainman says Mark Valdez has had his dogs in Lead for many years and the incident was the first of its kind.
Valdez says his dogs are Siberian huskies, not wolves, with bloodlines that go back 30 years.
